From Membrane Innovation to Digital Intelligence: Transforming Wastewater Treatment
The R3VOLUTION project is advancing sustainable wastewater treatment for industrial wastewater by combining innovative materials with digital optimisation tools. Two new factsheets about project outcomes have now been released.
On the technology side, advanced ceramic membranes for vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) have been developed and tested with real industrial wastewater. These membranes achieve high performance, with fluxes of around 20 kg/m²h, while improvements in module design, guided by CFD simulations, help overcome key challenges like uneven pressure distribution and scaling: Link to factsheet here.
At the same time, a Python-based process model enables the digital simulation of the entire treatment system at industrial scale. This tool supports mass and energy balances, identifies bottlenecks, and allows optimisation of operating conditions to improve both economic and environmental performance: Link to factsheet here.
Together, these advances create a powerful synergy: better membranes and smarter system design, paving the way for more efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable wastewater treatment solutions.
